When you become a parent, you’re faced with a lot of difficult decisions. Should you paint the nursery periwinkle or punch pink? Should you go with cloth or disposable diapers? Should you start sleep training in the womb? Okay – maybe not. But, wouldn’t it be nice?

One decision that all moms face is the aspect of feeding. Some mothers choose to exclusively breastfeed, some to exclusively pump, and others to bottle feed instead. Choices will vary based on personal preferences and situations.

Today, there are a wide array of products that make your life easier, no matter the route you decide to take.

With all of the available products on the market claiming to be the best, how can you really be sure? If you’re a mom who’s interested in pumping, you’ll want to ensure that you choose the breast pump that fits your lifestyle, budget, and convenience.

Many mothers choose the Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump because it’s considered to be the crème de la crème of breast pumps and has steadily maintained its popularity over the years.

But is it really so? Let’s review some of the pros and cons, as well as some of the features this pump has to offer.

How Much Does The Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump Cost?

To find out how much the Medela Pump in Style Advanced breast pump costs, you can head over to Medela’s website and check out the retail price they list over there.

It’s in the ballpark of some of the other top breast pumps out there on the market today, though, so rest assured that you won’t be breaking the bank if you plan on buying and using it.

You can check their website to see if your health insurance will cover the cost of the pump and whether or not you can end up getting it for free.

What’s Included With The Breast Pump?

This breast pump offers a generous amount of accessories to help you get started:

  • 1 double pumping kit with PersonalFit breast shields (2 valves, 4 membranes, 1 set of tubes)
  • 1 cooler bag with an ice pack (can fit four bottles)
  • Power adapter
  • Battery pack (requires 8 AA batteries; batteries not included)
  • 4 breastmilk bottles with lids
  • 1 year limited warranty on the motor & 90 days on limited parts

Are There Different Styles and Versions Of This Pump?

There are three different styles of the Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump for you to choose from.

Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and whichever you choose will depend on your specific needs. All styles come in the color black.

1) On-the-Go Tote

Medela Pump in Style Advanced with On the Go Tote, Double Electric Breast Pump, Nursing Breastfeeding Supplement, Portable Battery Pack, Sleek Microfiber Tote Bag included with Breastpump

This tote bag is spacious and contains built-in bottle holders and pockets for tubing.

This style is great for moms who do a lot of pumping and are always out and about, or for a working mother.

It also features a built-in pump which is great for moms who want to be discreet about their business.

From the outside, it looks like an ordinary tote bag. It weighs nine pounds, which some may consider too heavy for lugging around.

2) Backpack

Medela, Pump in Style, Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump with Backpack, Two-Phase Expression Technology, One-Touch Let Down Button, Adjustable Speed and Vacuum, Tote Backpack

This bag is great for moms who want to wear it around the house while they pump wearing a pumping bra. It features a built-in pump motor.

It’s also nice for mothers who go on short trips because the backpack has room to store personal items as well.

The backpack weighs eight pounds, so it’s a little lighter than the on-the-go tote bag, although not by much.

However, some may view the storage space as awkward because everything is stacked on top of each other. For instance, if you wanted to grab something from the bottom of the bag, you’d have to unpack the other items first to get to it eventually.

3) Messenger Bag

Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump, Double Electric Breast Pump Kit, Portable Battery Pack, Stylish Microfiber Messenger Bag, Removable Cooler, Contoured Ice Pack, Bottles,2 Breast Shield Sizes

This is the only one out of the three that comes with the option to remove the motor pump.

It comes in its own separate case, which we personally love. There are times when you don’t need to carry the whole bag with you. Maybe you want to leave the pump at work and carry the bag home with you each day.

It also comes with two sizes of breast shields and the bag has mesh storage pockets that make it easy to organize parts and accessories.

This bag also weighs eight pounds, which makes it the same weight as the backpack. However, with the capability to remove the pump case, the bag becomes a lot lighter to carry.

The downside to this bag is that some users experienced the shoulder strap sliding off easily which made it a bit of an inconvenience for moms who walk to get places. It may not be the best option if you commute by foot or you walk long distances.

What’s Good About The Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump?

First things first, let’s take a detailed look at some of the most notable advantages the Medela Pump in Style Advanced breast pump has to offer.

2 Phase Expression

This feature is unique to the Medela pump.

Medela’s website gives us the scoop on how this technology works, “Babies do not suck the same way throughout the breastfeeding session – instead, they use a “two speed” sucking motion, where at first they suck quickly (but not too deeply), and then they switch to a slower, deeper suckling rhythm.

The fast sucking motion stimulates the mother’s milk ejection reflex and gets milk to flow, and then the slower sucking draws out a larger volume of milk for the feeding phase.”

You can read more on the benefits of this over on Medela’s website (linked to above).

Many moms – me included – can attest to the efficiency of this process. It certainly makes the process more natural-like, and most importantly, it produces milk efficiently.

Double & Single Option

The pump allows you the option of pumping one breast at a time or both at the same time.

Being able to pump both at the same time is such a huge time saver. The pump is quick and efficient as well. It usually does not take longer than 15 minutes to fill the bottles.

BPA Free

All of the bottles and parts that come in contact with the milk are BPA free. This is a nice advantage for those who are health conscious.

All feeding materials are actually made of polypropylene, which is considered to be baby safe.

Accessories

No matter which style you choose, the Medela brand pump does offer a lot in the way of accessories.

Battery Pack

Many moms, including myself, adore the battery pack.

Seriously, I couldn’t live without this thing. It’s such a luxury to be able to pump anywhere and not have to worry yourself with being situated near an outlet.

The battery pack makes pumping while driving possible too (when you have a good pumping bra).

The battery pack claims to provide two hours of pumping time, but I’ve gone long periods of time in the car with the pack.

It does take eight AA batteries, which can be costly to replace if you’re a mom who requires frequent use of this feature. However, I’ve found that rechargeable batteries seemed to work better and solved the cost problem.

Milk Storage Bag

This is another feature that is highly praised and appreciated among pumping moms.

The milk storage bag comes with a contoured ice pack that holds four bottles in the upright position. This means no more spilled milk!

Whoever coined the expression, “there’s no use crying over spilled milk,” has obviously never pumped before!

Vehicle Lighter Adapter

If you don’t have the battery pack, this is another handy charging option that plugs right into your car’s cigarette lighter.

This is great for moms who may not have a place to pump at work and would prefer to pump in the privacy of their car.

Medela Pump in Style Advanced – 3 Different Options

What Are The Downsides To The Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump?

Even though this is one of the best breast pumps out there today, it does have a few shortcomings you need to be aware of before deciding whether or not it’s the right option for you.

Open System/Condensation

Basically, this means that milk has the potential to get inside of your tubes.

This happened quite frequently with me, and I found myself needing to wash the tubing after every pump session.

It’s recommended that you rinse warm water through the tubes and let them air dry. The high heat of the dishwasher will melt the tubing, though, so be careful.

The condensation can be a serious hygienic problem because mold can build up in the tubes and pass into your milk supply. Many moms find they have to replace the tubing because of not knowing this beforehand.

The good thing is you can buy a Medela breast pump kit that has everything you need for a decent price.

Noise Level

The pump is loud.

Now, I don’t know of many pumps that aren’t. However, if you’re a mom who is trying to keep pumping at work on the down low, the noise is definitely going to blow your cover.

During the middle of the night, the pump can be a nuisance to your partner. If they value precious sleep as much as you do, do them a favor and pump in a different room!

Wear & Tear

Membranes tend to rupture or tear pretty easily after a couple of hand washes. When this happens, it can seriously affect your motor’s suction power.

Be careful to check the membranes frequently for tears so you have maximum expression capability at all times.

So, What’s The General Consensus?

Many regard the Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump as the best in terms of home-grade pumps.

It’s highly recommended for moms who will be pumping on a daily basis, and for moms who work or are always on the go. The portability of this pump is better suited for moms who are out of the house for extended periods of time.

It may not be the most suitable for stay-at-home moms because of the built-in motor features and the noise level.

I noticed that after a few months of daily use, the suction power started to slow down. It didn’t seem to work as efficiently and it felt like it needed to be turned up to full strength to pump the same amounts I had months prior.

Some may also view the lack of double controls for strength and speed that other pumps have as a negative.

In general, though, many mothers approve of this pump and praise it highly.

Overall, this pump is an award winner for busy moms. If you can get past some of the downfalls, then you may find that you’re one of many who find this to be an excellent product.

Let’s be honest. No one really enjoys pumping. It takes hard work to maintain, a lot of time and careful planning. However, technology is making pumping easier and the Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump offers something for every busy mom.

The benefits tend to outweigh the disadvantages. It’s important to love your pump because it’ll be your trusty sidekick.

When choosing this pump, consider how often you’ll be using it and how you’ll be using it. If you plan on pumping every day and taking it with you to work or on your travels, this may just be the right option for you!
